1For the baklava: Combine walnuts, sugar, cinnamon, and cloves.
2
Brush 9x9-inch baking pan with butter. Cut 16 sheets of fillo dough in half to make 32 sheets. Place 6 buttered fillo sheets on the bottom. Sprinkle with 1/3 of the walnut mixture. Place 6 more buttered fillo sheets on top, then sprinkle with 1/3 more of the walnut mixture. Then top with another 6 buttered fillo sheets and the rest of the walnut mixture. Finish the baklava with another 14 fillo sheets and brush with the remaining butter.
3
With a very sharp knife, score fillo into 1 1/2" squares or diamonds. Bake in the oven for 45 minutes to 1 hour or until golden brown.
4For the syrup: Bring all the syrup ingredients to a boil. Simmer for 10 minutes. Strain and cool slightly. Pour warm syrup over slightly cooled baklava. Cool completely before cutting and serving.
